Cashiers – Glenville Recreation Center

The Recreation Center functions as an activity focal point for a loose grouping of community facilities, which also include the library, post office, two baseball fields, swimming pool, two day care centers, fire station, satellite county offices & maintenance, the old community center built in the 50’s and the 12. . . . . . acre Village Green & Commons, an event facility.

An important requirement of the village planning council was that the building expresses the scale, the character and the natural materials of our quaint mountain village. The size and the height of the gymnasium presented a challenge. The inclusion of a running track surrounding the gymnasium, with a lower roof structure, significantly lowers the exterior scale by emphasizing horizontality. Translucent panels between the two roof levels and glass boarding much of the running track bring balanced day light into the interior and views to the outside.

In addition to the gymnasium and running track, the facility includes a weight/fitness room, an aerobics/dance exercise room and a meeting room/kitchen. The materials are split face block, Tennessee field stone and wood.
